Acting Director of Selective Service Joel C. Spangenberg Commemorates the 107th Anniversary of the Selective Service System (SSS)

On May 16, 2024, Acting Director of Selective Service Joel C. Spangenberg delivered remarks as part of a wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery to commemorate the 107th anniversary of the Selective Service System (SSS) and honor the life of General Lewis Blaine Hershey, the longest-serving Director of Selective Service.

SSS has evolved significantly since its inception in 1917, particularly because of the leadership of General Hershey and his relentless pursuit of a prompt, efficient, and impartial system of conscription in the United States. His legacy continues to guide the Agency’s mission, which represents an important element of America’s national security capabilities.

The Agency serves as an additional tier of support to the Nation’s all-volunteer military.  Registration with SSS is the most visible aspect of SSS during peacetime, while the Agency continuously modernizes its systems and operations.

As part of his remarks, Acting Director Spangenberg said, “While we earnestly hope for a peaceful future, our mission remains paramount: to maintain readiness should the President and Congress reinstate a draft due to a national emergency, such as a major conflict.”
